Orphan’s Pension
What is the Orphan’s Pension (AWW)?
The Widow and Orphan Insurance Law (Algemene Wezen- en Weduwenverzekering or AWW) is an insurance covering the financial consequences of the passing away of one or both parents who are insured. When a person becomes an orphan, they are eligible to receive a pension under the AWW law.
How much is the orphan’s pension?
- An orphan up to 9 years Afl. 423,- monthly if one parent passed away; Afl. 452,- monthly if both parents passed away.
- An orphan from 10 years to 14 years Afl. 452,- monthly if one parent passed away; Afl. 496,- monthly if both parents passed away.
- An orphan from 15 years to 24 years Afl. 496,- monthly if one parent passed away; Afl. 574,- monthly if both parents passed away.
These amounts do not include the reparatietoeslag (repair supplement).
Reparatietoeslag (repair supplement)
The reparatietoeslag is a compensation that the Government of Aruba grants, through the SVb, to the pensioner. The reparatietoeslag is not part of the AOV pension.
The Government of Aruba has made the decision that every person who is:
- registered at the Civil registry of Aruba;
- receives an AOV/AWW pension through SVb Aruba;
receives the reparatietoeslag of Afl. 200,- monthly.
Who is the orphan’s insurance for?
The orphan insurance is for:
- All orphans up to 14 years old.
- Any orphan between the ages of 15 and 25 who attend school. SVb must receive a statement of attendance/enrollment from the school each new school year from the orphan between 15 and 25 years old.
- Any orphan who is (partially) disabled or has a handicap.
How can the orphan apply for an orphan’s pension?
To make the application the surviving parent, guardian, or orphan must apply via the SVb Pension portal. Open https://pensioenen.svbaruba.org and follow the next steps:
- Register as a new user: follow the steps to create a new user account for the MiPensioen portal. Take into account that a valid email must be provided. The password must contain 6 characters or more, and must have at least:
- one upper case (capital) letter (A-Z)
- one lowercase letter (a-z)
- one number (0-9)
- one special character, for instance: (!@#$%*?)
- When the registration is done the system sends a confirmation email. Check your spam or junkmail folder for the confirmation mail.
- After confirming the account use the previously registered username and password to log in.
- In the main screen there is the option to fill out a new application. Follow these steps.
To finalize the application the following digital documents must be provided:
- A valid passport, driver’s license, or identity card of the orphan and the deceased parent(s).
- Death certificate(s).
- An official document with the bank account number. The minor’s orphan must present the bank document of their surviving parent or guardian.

Additional requirements for those living abroad
If the orphan is not living in Aruba or the Netherlands, they are required to provide SVb a certificate of proof of life (written evidence that the person is alive) at the time of application.
After the application is approved, the person living abroad must see that SVb receives proof of life every 3 to 6 months. SVb does not accept a copy of the proof of life certificate. Pensioners who live abroad can hand in the life certificate at:
- In some cases at the SVb in the former Netherlands Antilles.
- In some cases, at the Embassy of the Netherlands.
The proof of life certificate is obtained at the government office, lawyer, or notary.
Personal Change
In case of changes regarding the orphan’s personal situation, the SVb must be notified within two weeks in writing. This among others in case of:
- Change of personal information (address, telephone number, bank account).
- If an orphan goes to live abroad or resettles in Aruba.
- If an orphan stops attending school.
In case of a change in a personal situation, this may have consequences for the pension amount. An orphan, their parent, or their family guardian must notify the SVb of any change in their personal situation. If the SVb wrongfully pays pension, the SVb has the right to reclaim this benefit.
Termination of pension
The orphan’s pension is terminated under the following circumstances:
- When the orphan reaches the age of 25.
- When the orphan no longer attends school from age 15. SVb needs to receive a statement of attendance/enrollment from the school each new school year from the orphan at age 15 to continue receiving the orphan’s pension.
